Southend 2-1 Colchester

Southend entertained Colchester United today at the Boots & Laces in a behind closed doors friendly as we continue our fitness work ahead of the coming 2014-15 season.

The game was what you'd expect from a BCD friendly, but it was a good showing by Southend apparently, and striker Lee Barnard opening the scoring from the penalty spot - it was of course his first strike of pre season as well.

Arguably it shouldn't have been his only goal either, as moments later he pulled off a good save from their keeper.

We did however double our advantage just after the half time break when midfielder Will Atkinson fired home from 14 yards. Atkinson was in an unfamiliar position on the day as he was playing left wing.

Myles Weston went close twice as well, and following a host of changes from both sides, Colchester got themselves back into it somewhat with their goal, but that was how the game ended.

Adam Thompson and Ryan Leonard also both featured following injury, and Paul Smith, Ben Coker, Luke Prosser, Kevan Hurst and Will Atkinson all got 90 minutes under their belts.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, manager Phil Brown explained that he was delighted to see the duo return and come through a good 60 minutes following injury and missing the game against Braintree last weekend.

'Adam was a bit unlucky last season in that his progression was curtailed by injury after earning his 18 months with us. He's had a back problem in pre season so it was good to see him back. Lenny got about the pitch in the first half and made an impression on the game, but around the hour mark we could see he was tiring so made the change.'

As for the overall performance the gaffer added.

'They played a strong team for the majority of the game, even that players that came on included the likes of Sean Clohessy who we all know well from his time at Southend. We moved the ball around well, got a good goal in the second half, and maybe could have had a few more. It was another step up, which was important for the players.'
