Conference Premier side Braintree Town took victory in our game against them on Saturday at their Amlin Stadium.
It was a hot day, and took both sides a while to wake up really, as very little of note happened until just before the half time break, where our hosts took the lead.
Going into the half time break a goal behind wasn't exactly the plan and the players came back out brightly, and levelled the scores within minutes of the restart as Barry Corr lifted the ball over a rushing keeper to make it one all.
Their winner came in arguable circumstances as the referee awarded them a penalty 25 minutes from time. Conor Clifford did rattle the bar from 25 yards just before full time though and that was as close as we came to levelling the scores for a second time.
It was a decent run out though and manager Phil Brown told the Official Site that he was relatively pleased despite the result.
'Results aren't important at this stage but we want a winning mentality, so it was frustrating that the deciding goal was a controversial penalty. We were pressing to try and win the game and got a bit caught out, but it wasn't a penalty in my opinion. Despite the result we got a lot from the game. The conditions were very hot but the players worked extremely hard. That's the most important thing at this stage. It was a decent game between two sides that wanted to play, so hopefully the supporters enjoyed it.'
The game did feature a number of trialists as Brown used the opportunity to look more at them, and former defender Leon Cort featured in the second half, whilst Gavin Hoyte and Roman Michael-Percil again featured. Former Hereford and Newcastle right back, Dan Leadbitter, also featured in the second half.
'We're making up numbers with trialists at the moment and some of them impressed. Leon was short of match fitness, but he'll be back in. They all did what they could but we have got to make the decisions that benefit the club and help us progress, so we'll speak to them all over the next couple of days.'
Bentley, Hoyte (T) (Leadbitter (T)), White (Cort (T)), Prosser (Banton), Coker, Hurst (Fagan), Clifford, Atkinson (Payne), Michael-Percil (T) (Barnard), Corr (Liburd), Weston (Bridge).
