The Report: Southend 1 Torquay United 0
A win that Southend needed to keep our League 2 promotion aspirations in place came on Saturday thanks to a one-nil win over Torquay United with Freddy Eastwood scoring a vital goal.
Southend should've gone ahead through Liverpool loanee Jakub Sokolik really but the ball feel to the wrong player really with the defender volleying over, what was an open goal, from just six yards out.
The bar denied John White another goal as our captain headed Kevan Hurst's corner against the bar.
Lee Barnard, who would have seen his confidence grow from his first goal for us since his loan return, went close with an effort from range but a frustrating goal less draw looked on at that point.
Eastwood showed Sokolik how to finish from six yards though with time running out.
A first goal since October, when the former Welsh international fired into the roof of the net from a telling cross from Norwich loanee Jacob Murphy, was enough to give us a win and move us back into the play off positions.
Now that we're back into the top seven it's down to us to keep hold on it.
We'll not need to rely on anyone else doing us a favour as long as we do ourselves one with a previous brush with disaster hopefully something we've learned from and we'll take that onboard to make sure we don't suffer the heartache of missing the play offs, which a league position for most of the season suggests we shouldn't.
