Leonard Pens New Southend Deal
Ryan Leonard has committed his long term future to our Roots Hall outfit after putting pen to paper on a new three and a half year deal at the club.
The deal was struck earlier today, and the 21 year old who joined us back in July 2011 has played a key role in midfield for us this term, whilst also filling in defensively when asked.
He will now remain at the club until the summer of 2017.
Having been made temporary captain in the absence of John White, and playing 35 times, with six goals, it's a great boost for the club coming so quickly after Kevan Hurst's own recent deal.
Speaking to the Official Site as the deal was announced, Leonard said.
'I'm delighted to have signed a new contract because I've really enjoyed my time with Southend. I've had the best season of my career so far and have managed to keep my place in a position I only really moved to under the new manager in the summer. I want to continue my development and I feel that Southend is the perfect place for me to do that.'
Manager Phil Brown was obviously delighted to see a key player for us sign up long term, and he described him as being a really 'big player' for us, despite making the move to midfield where it may have taken him longer to adjust.
'I've been pleased with his progress in the game and I'm delighted that he'd going to be staying with us for the future. With both Kevan and Ryan both agreeing new contracts, it's a clear sign that we're trying to get some stability here at the club.'
