Brown - Southend's Luck Is Out
Manager Phil Brown has said that following our one all draw with Wycombe Wanderers he can only conclude that our luck is out at the moment.
Southend took the lead in the game through a Barry Corr goal, but seven minutes later the ball came back off our own woodwork and hit goalkeeper Daniel Bentley in the back and went in off him.
Speaking to the Official Site following the draw the gaffer explained.
'I spoke to the fourth official about 30 minutes in because of the time they were taking over everything and he said you need to score to quicken them up. We upped the ante and got the goal which we absolutely deserved.'
The problem for Brown then was he felt we didn't keep the lead long enough to make it count and pressure them so we could stamp our authority on the game properly, and hopefully to have then built on it and got the second.
The gaffer admitted that Bentley was very down in the dressing room over the own goal, but everyone knows there is nothing he could've done about it as it was remarkable and you don't really see that kind of thing as often as you would probably expect in football.
However, it does perfectly 'sum up our luck at this moment in time' but all we can do about that is keep going, keep plugging away and work hard to change our luck during games.
What is also costing us he feels is a lack of belief in the final third when we are attempting to convert chances, but the one thing he can't fault them for is their effort during matches.
