The Report: Accrington Stanley 1 Southend 1

I'd said that Accrington Stanley was a game we could do with winning if Southend had serious promotion aspirations. This isn't something that we could manage but we showed we're a resilient side as the disappointment of slipping behind didn't result in us being beaten as Prosser rescued us a point in the one-one draw.

Both sides had some very good first half chances, so when the break came and the game was still nil-nil that was a surprise. Bowerman should have scored with probably the first halves best chance. Through on goal Bentley denied him but with an open goal to aim at for the rebound he couldn't hit the target and the game stayed as it was.

Accrington had to start with teenage goalkeeper Dawber and he didn't let them down as he made a number of saves throughout the ninety minutes, denying Timlin and Corr at least once, Timlin again in the second half when he found himself away and clear. Dawber might have saved well with his legs but Timlin would have expected to score.

I'm sure that Naylor used to be the one that played for Wolves and Celtic, maybe even England once? Beattie has managed to attract a number of ex Premier League players to Accrington so I'd not be surprised if it was. It was his cross into the box that saw them take the lead. Phillips, the savour on Boxing Day to make sure we got a point, was the unfortunate defender that turned the ball past Bentley on 63 minutes to see Accrington go ahead.

Concussion ruled Prosser out of the Boxing Day game, and he was doubtful again heading into this one, but he made it and we'll be thankful that he did as the defender was able to rise highest to head home a Hurst corner and level for Southend on 78 minutes.

Maybe we could still go on and win the three points? That wasn't possible, for us or Accrington, but a one-all draw isn't a bad result against one of the most inform League 2 sides at the moment as they've lost only twice in thirteen games.
