The Report: Wimbledon 0 Southend 1

The Report: Wimbledon 0 Southend 1

True to form, much as I'd predicted I would be, I was stuffed to bursting point on Boxing Day after my over indulgence on Christmas Day. I also got my wish though that, on one of my most favourite days of the footballing year, Southend would win. This was managed thanks to Woodrow coming off the bench to head home the winner in the one-nil win at Wimbledon.

Southend's hopes of winning improved before half time when Francomb, who had also had the best chance of the half when he forced Bentley into a flying save to tip his curler around the post, was shown a straight red card. His forceful tackle on Kiernan was deemed overzealous and he was dismissed. Hurst, very much in form for us and looking to extend his time with the club, had our best first half effort.

Wimbledon's 10-men not only looked as though they would frustrate us, but they also threatened a winner of their own but as time ticked away and the game remained scoreless you thought it could be a nil-niler? Woodrow wasn't having that though and came off the bench to power home a header from White's cross on 76 minutes, he'd come off the bench on the hour (comment the hour and all that).

Phillips had to be at his best right at the end to preserve the lead as we recovered from a couple of draws, either side of a defeat, to win again.
