Gomis Bedsente impressed Phil Brown in a behind closed doors friendly with Gillingham on Tuesday, however his future at Southend hangs in the balance.
The transfer embargo that Southend have hanging over them limits the number of players that can come in, and with a defensive recruit of utmost importance a move for the Senegalese midfielder needs to be put on hold...
Brown wants to sign Bedsente but can't afford to use the remaining squad place with his signing, however he hopes that some patience can be shown as if it is he's hopeful the situation can change and he can come in?
He told the Echo: 'I have a real soft spot for Gomis and in an ideal world I'd like to bring him in. However, the way things are at the moment with the embargo that's in place I think our need for a defender is far greater.
'We have plenty of options in midfield and up front but at the back it was four from four against Scunthorpe on Friday and that's where we need to strengthen.
'It's a horrible situation and it leaves Gomis' future hanging on a piece of string, which isn't nice for him at all but I've told him that if he can stay around for a couple of weeks hopefully the situation with the embargo can change and we'll be able to sign him because I think he would do well for us.'
Fingers crossed things can change, as if Bedsente can offer something to the Shrimpers squad, possibly even the starting XI regularly, it would be a real shame to miss out on him...
Anthony Edgar was another trialist to feature in that game, the winger played the full 90-minutes but he isn't going to be offered the chance to stay at Roots Hall.
Bobby Devyne was meant to play up front but picked up an injury before the game so the former Chelsea striker's chance will have to come another time, if it does at all?
One man that did his chance no harm at all was youngster Ryan Auger, he impressed the boss playing at right back.
Brown added: I thought Ryan was exceptional. He showed good versatility and a real footballing brain by being able to play in three different positions, which was fantastic to see.
'The second half was much better than the first and I think the young players out there learnt some valuable lessons.'
Perhaps an option for Brown to look at in the first team?
