Third Time Unlucky

Third Time Unlucky

Southend's unbeaten start to pre-season ended with a defeat at Conference outfit Braintree on Wednesday.

Sean Marks had the host ahead early on but an own goal from Matt Paine got Southend level.

A draw seemed on the cards until Nicky Symons scored with a long-ranged effort with time running out to see the Shrimpers slip to a 2-1 defeat, there first in three outings.

Starting XI: Bentley; White, Tatham, Barker, Coker; Straker, Hurst (Atkinson 45), Laird, Scott; Eastwood, Hemmings.

Second XI (All 60 mins): Smith; Auger, Phillips, Prosser, Bruno; Taylor, Payne, Atkinson, Silva; Erskine, Njie.
