Alex Woodyard being among the players released by Southend recently was a surprise to some.
Phil Brown, as he told The Echo, feels that his release will allow some other younger players to come through that might have been held back had he been retained, he said: 'I went to see Alex at Braintree when he was on loan there, I also saw him in training and a behind-closed-doors friendly.
'In that game against Stevenage we had a number of young lads in the same position so I had to make a decision on them as well in terms of whether they were offered a third-year development deal or a pro-contract.
'I felt that in key areas we were a bit blocked up, especially in central midfield and it was stopping the likes of Jack Payne and Jack Edwards from getting a chance.'
Only time will tell if Brown has made the right move, however he's the boss so you have to back his judgement.
