Paul Sturrock's latest meeting with his former side Plymouth ended in defeat for Southend as their fading play off hopes took another dent.
Plymouth through they'd taken a first half lead when Paris Cowan-Hall got a touch Jason Banton's effort, but with Cowan-Hall in an offside position that ruled that one out.
As the hour mark approached Plymouth had the chance to take the lead when Bilel Mohsni conceded a penalty. Paul Wotton (57) stepped up and made no mistake.
Britt Assombalonga and Gavin Tomlin both went close for Southend before Reuben Reid (75) wrapped up a 2-0 win for Plymouth, to boost their survival hopes, late on.
