Southend Beaten By Promotion Rivals

Southend 1-2 Northampton
16th February 2013
15:00
Roots Hall

Southend suffered a setback in their promotion bid when they were beaten by promotion rivals Northampton at Roots Hall. Playing most the game with 10-men didn't help matters!

Roy O'Donovan (11), former a loanee with Southend, put Northampton into an early lead and their chances of victory increased before the half hour mark when the hosts were reduced to 10-men. Coming in from the cold, having been frozen out at Southend, Bilel Mohsni (as he had been so many times in his Southend career) saw red for a rash challenge!

Despite this numerical disadvantage Southend drew level at the midway point of the second half. Matthew Lund (65), signed on loan earlier in the week from Stoke, headed home and it was the hosts that looked more likely to find that winner.

However, a late Kelvin Langmead (90) header gave Northampton a 2-1 win and cement their promotion push whilst denting Southend's.
