Southend were hoping to bring Cameron Belford back to Roots Hall for a third loan spell, and believed this was secured before the keeper had a "change of mind."
Paul Sturrock, as he told the official website, revealed this on Saturday ahead of the weekend win over Exeter: 'We had agreed with Cameron yesterday morning to come back on a short-term deal.
'By the afternoon he had changed his mind and decided he wished to explore other opportunities to further his career.
'We tried to change his mind but that's his decision and we wish him all the best with that.'
Another short-term loan was lined up to bring the Bury keeper in as cover for the injured Paul Smith, but his decision not to do so allowed youngster Daniel Bentley to make his full Shrimpers debut in the win over Exeter on Saturday.
